On July 29th, Ron spoke with a virtual gathering of Texas health care community and business leaders connected through the Healthcare Think Tank. His comments, and the questions and answers that followed, centered on the COVID-19 pandemic, its regional health and socioeconomic impact, efforts to create effective therapeutics, and the need for better national and international coordination.
Speaking on what he calls “The COVID Moment,” Dr. DePinho emphasized the urgency for understanding the opportunity presented by the pandemic.
“Consider what we did globally with HIV in the 80s and 90s,” he noted, “when we projected HIV as the greatest societal and economic threat to the world in the 21th century. What did we do to change that trajectory?“
A major collaborative effort of diverse stakeholders was launched, including major corporations, every government in Africa, many nations of the world, NGOs, philanthropic organizations like The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and many others… all focused on bending the arc of that disease. That same collective action is what is needed now. The greatest challenge we have moving forward is the issue of national and global coordination.”
